Case Studies: Colegio Nacional José Pedro Varela

Colegio Nacional José Pedro Varela is a very well known Latin American nonprofit educational institution. Here at Montevideo, Uruguay, we began working in digital communications back in the 1980s and since then we have considered the idea of a Virtual School. In the 1990s, we developed our own BSS with forums for teachers and students.

In 1992 we developed our own User Interface in C language which runs on a UNIX system. Electronic mail has always been a primary factor of our educational interaction starting with 300 users and now having grown to more than 2500.

We were looking for a tool to allow our teachers and students to exchange information, opinions and knowledge. We overloaded our analogic leased line to the Internet with our email traffic. In May 1995 we started our own web server, which at the time was only the fifth existing one in our country. We fought to get a high speed digital connection and for the grants to do it. Now we have our own leased digital line. We had a lot of success but the problem was how to get teachers and students connected in an effective way. After extensive research we noticed that the only way to do that was with the use of LISTSERV® mailing list manager, with lists for each class and project. That was really great and we were able to restart a lot of projects that had been stopped. Our students like LISTSERV very much and our teachers can manage their lists like editors.

Case study written in July 1998 with the assistance of Marcelo Kruk, Webmaster, Colegio Nacional José Pedro Varela.
