Case Studies: AIESEC

Hello from AIESEC Bangalore, India
About LISTSERV discussion lists: Simply put, it's changed the way we work here in Bangalore, India – revolutionized would be a better word. Two years ago, AIESEC Bangalore was a local organization! Yes! A local organization that called itself international, and did local projects, and had poor exchange statistics in terms of the number of people exchanged. And then came the LISTSERV lists.
A simple response to a message on one of the discussion lists resulted in a cooperation plan between AIESEC of Bangalore and AIESEC of St. Paul's, Tokyo, Japan. Two weeks after an e-mail was exchanged through the LISTSERV list, Misato Narahara, Local Committee Vice President of Exchange (LCVPX), AIESEC St. Paul's Tokyo, flew down to India to discuss this cooperation plan ... and now we are working on a joint project involving a large delegation of Japanese AIESEC members coming to India next summer, as well as a concrete cooperation in the International Traineeship Exchange Program (ITEP), and the Youth Development Envoy Program (YDEP), which is already bearing results. The number of people exchanges has also gone up drastically since the discussion lists were introduced. Even today, I am holding in my hand, 10 applications for a traineeship available here in Bangalore from over the world. Through an announcement on a LISTSERV list, I have received these applications/resumes within 14 days. I can go on and on ... the exchange of views between people every day, day after day, has led to an improvement in our systems and processes, it has generated new project ideas, it has opened our eyes to new opportunities, to mistakes that have been made, solutions, views and cooperation ... AIESEC Bangalore in India is now an international organization!

Letter from AIESEC Ecuador
One of the major problems of our National Committee (NC) in Ecuador is that we live in five different cities, which means that we have to invest a lot of money in order to meet every month, to call each other whenever there's a problem, and to visit our Local Committees (LCs) for training. Since the national and local LISTSERV lists have been introduced, we've been able to enormously reduce the costs of travel, phone calls, and training visits.
Four out of five LCs have free access to the Internet and e-mail, thanks to the universities. This connectivity allows all of the AIESEC members in Ecuador to communicate through mailing lists. Our national list (ec-voice@lists.aiesec.org) receives more or less 5 messages a day, most of them requesting information, help, sending inputs about questions, invitations to events, etc. It is very useful for our national communication. Two out of the five local lists are very popular (ec-pu-voice and ec-cc-voice) because the members prefer to use these lists to communicate events, ideas, anything, instead of using the phone. Now everybody knows that they have to check their mail at least once a day in order to know what's happening in their LCs.

Letter from AIESEC Germany / UK
I am a trainee now in the UK, and was LCP in Bremen, Germany before. Without the INT-DIRECT-TN mailing list I wouldn't be here now!
In the UK, we are using the TRAINEE mailing list quite a lot because it is the best way for every trainee to really get information about receptions on weekends and any other event all over the UK. Additionally, as I am currently a trainee, I cannot keep in touch with AIESEC as much so I have subscribed to different mailing lists so that I can still keep up to date as much as possible.
When I was part of the CC-Team in Atlanta, the INT-CONF-CC mailing list helped us with gathering all the information we needed to prepare ourselves for the conference and then to keep in touch afterwards.
LISTSERV lists are an easy way to get to know and use the international network of AIESEC.

Letter from AIESEC Peru
Several years ago, I was a typical South American Local Committee (LC) member. At that time, my vision of AIESEC was that of a club of students, that organized projects in the University. What was happening in the AIESEC world was very far from me, and I was not aware of any activities or programs. One day I did a query of AIESEC in an Internet search engine and I found an extensive list of related web sites. That was the first time I realized that AIESEC in the world was much closer than I had ever thought. Next, I researched their main web site at www.aiesec.org, and then their mailing lists.
I subscribed to some of the mailing lists, and I remember that the first time I sent a personal reply, I sent it to all of the recipients of the list by accident. This episode definitely taught me how to use e-mail. Nevertheless, I was still very motivated to participate on the AIESEC discussion lists.
At my first international event in Ecuador at the American Conference (AMCO), it was the first time I was able to contact the people who direct AIESEC in the world. At this encounter, I realized that I had friends that I had never contacted personally, but that I knew from the discussion lists. From this experience I confirmed that the AIESEC world is even closer than I had thought. It was also the first time I heard about Insight.
Over the next months, I learnt more about the organization that I am a part of. Also, by reading the web pages and participating on the discussion lists, I am able to better understand what AIESEC is really about.
The more I learn through the discussion lists, the more I want to transmit this knowledge to my friends in my country. And this is one of the strongest motivations for running a National Committee President (NCP).
I can say that these mailing lists have changed AIESEC in PERU. With the availability of LISTSERV mailing lists, we have organized an expansion program. We also have attracted international AIESEC members to come to Peru to help us in the development of this program. All of this was possible because of the better communication that we have available with LISTSERV mailing list software.
With little time of having mailing lists at our disposal, we have been able to accomplish so much. Imagine what we will accomplish with more time!
Needless to say, AIESEC's mailing lists are changing my life. Today I feel the world is of all AIESEC members, for doing as much or as little as we want.
AIESECly your friend
